From
the President’s Easy Chair
Have many of you heard that the right side of
the brain is the creative/artisitic side, and the left is the analytical
side. Having not much use for the left side of my brain as it got closer
to Christmas, I sat at work daydreaming one day and came up with a "WHY"
scenario. Why, on western saddles, do we attach our girth, back cinch,
breast collar, rope (if we're a real cowboy) and saddlebags, (with a
six pack of beer) onto the right side of the saddle? Some of us are
macho enough, skilled enough, or talented enough to swing the approximately
60 lbs of gear up and over to land softly on the horses back. Most of
us wind up with a tangled mess munched up underneath the saddle and
get to untangle all that crap, which generally makes us break a few
fingernails, curse like a sailor and have the saddle blanket slide out
of place too. Why don't we attach all the rigging to the left side,
so we only have to sling a fender and a stirrup over the horses back,
then we would do everything up on the right hand side? Yes, it would
feel a bit awkward at first, I'm sure, but if we were all as talented
and athletic as most cowboys, then we would also be getting on and off
either side with equal dexterity. My one friend thought it was a great
idea to switch everything over, and figured it was just tradition that
dictated that we have everything on the right hand side. My other friend
(yes, I actually have two) thought it was interesting also, but suggested
that maybe it would be simpler to just saddle the horse from the right
side, like she does. God I hate people that use the left side of their
brain….

lame-brained President
